A Quick History:

July 2009: Mane Message was Founded by Olivia Hayward in Santa Barbara, California. Olivia was going to school full time, interning and nannying. She needed a creative outlet desperately. She decided to put her design and photography skills to use and opened her Etsy shop

August 2009 - May 2011: Olivia was a student at Pitzer College studying Media Studies and Studio Art in Los Angeles. After opening her Etsy shop her hand tie dyed hair ties and headbands went viral quickly. She ran Mane Message out of her tiny dorm room (seriously teeny) making all the hair ties she could in her free time.

May 2011 - November 2011: After graduating Olivia moved to Oakland, California and was able to focus on Mane Message full time. She continued to grow the business and hired her first employee, her brother Sam, to help her tie dye elastic.

December 2011 - March 2013: Olivia moved into a turn-of-the-century 1-bedroom apartment in Berkeley and for the first time had plenty of space to create new work. She was able to hire more production helpers who allowed her to sell Mane Message to wholesale clients all over the world.

April 2013 - March 2015: Mane Message moved into its own Oakland workspace and focused on launching print hair ties, bobby pins and wire tie dyed headbands. Mane Message also participated its first ever trade shows during the summer of 2014 and met a lot of amazing small business owners along the way.

Present: Olivia is focusing on expanding the Mane Message product line by introducing rare vintage French barrettes and other accessories.
